Volumetric glassware classes

Class A vs Class B volumetric glassware: what buyers should specify

Class is a technical designation for defined volumetric instruments, not a general quality label for every piece of laboratory glassware.

Class should be tied to the instrument and standard

Class A and Class B are used with specified volumetric instruments where the relevant product standard defines permissible errors and other requirements. A beaker, for example, should not automatically be described as Class A simply because it is well made. Procurement should identify the exact instrument family, nominal capacity and applicable specification.

Why Class A is commonly requested

Class A is generally selected when tighter volumetric control is required by the applicable specification, laboratory procedure or buyer quality system. The designation should be supported by reviewed product evidence rather than used as a marketing phrase. Where Kitabō catalogue pages identify an item as Class A, that wording is limited to product records for which reviewed evidence supports it.

Class does not replace calibration requirements

A class designation and a calibration document answer different questions. The product standard defines applicable requirements for an instrument; calibration or testing documentation records an assessment under defined conditions. ISO 4787:2021 covers methods for testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments. If accredited laboratory work is required, that should be stated separately and the relevant scope confirmed.

What to put in an RFQ

  • Instrument type: flask, pipette, burette or measuring cylinder
  • Nominal capacity
  • Required class where applicable
  • Applicable standard or buyer specification
  • Batch or individual identification requirement
  • Testing or calibration documentation required
  • Clear/amber format, closure and other configuration details

This prevents quotations that look comparable while actually covering different technical and documentation scopes.
