Calibration and testing

Volumetric glassware calibration: what a buyer should ask for

Calibration, testing and product specification are related, but they should not be treated as interchangeable claims.

Where ISO 4787 fits

ISO 4787:2021 provides methods for the testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments made from glass and plastic. ISO includes single-volume pipettes, graduated pipettes, burettes, volumetric flasks and graduated measuring cylinders among the instrument families within its scope.

For purchasing, “calibrated glassware” is therefore not a complete specification on its own. The buyer should identify the instrument, capacity, applicable product requirement, documentation scope and whether assessment is individual or batch-based.

Testing and calibration should be described accurately

A product standard defines requirements for a particular instrument family. Testing can determine conformity of an individual instrument with an applicable requirement. Calibration determines measurement information under defined conditions. The document supplied should make clear what activity was performed and what item or batch it relates to.

Useful information in a calibration record

  • A clear item, batch or certificate identifier
  • Instrument type and nominal capacity
  • Method or referenced procedure
  • Measurement information appropriate to the activity
  • Date and responsible laboratory details
  • Revision or status information where documents can be superseded

The exact certificate content depends on the issuing laboratory and agreed scope.

Accredited work requires scope awareness

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 addresses competence, impartiality and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation of a laboratory does not mean every activity it performs is automatically within accredited scope. If accredited work is required, the requested activity should be confirmed against the laboratory’s applicable scope.

How Kitabō handles the requirement

For applicable volumetric products, testing or calibration requirements can be discussed during quotation. Availability, identification level, documentation and third-party scope are confirmed before order acceptance. Kitabō does not represent itself as an accredited laboratory.
