Volumetric flask specification

ISO 1042 volumetric flasks: a practical procurement guide

A standard reference is only one part of a complete volumetric-flask purchase specification.

Use ISO 1042 as part of a complete specification

ISO 1042 is the product-standard reference associated with one-mark volumetric flasks in the ISO family of volumetric glassware standards. A purchase description should still identify nominal capacity, applicable class where required, stopper or closure configuration, clear or amber format and any documentation requirement.

Capacity and class should be explicit

Nominal capacity is fundamental because volumetric requirements and physical dimensions vary by size and specification. Where Class A is required, the buyer should state it explicitly and confirm that the selected item code carries that classification in reviewed product data. Class should not be inferred from branding, printing quality or the presence of a QR code.

Clear versus amber

Clear and amber volumetric flasks serve different procurement needs. Amber formats are commonly selected where reduced light exposure is required, but suitability still depends on the chemical, method and laboratory SOP. Colour should be specified as a product attribute rather than treated as a substitute for method validation.

Stopper, marking and identification

Buyers should confirm stopper type, marking requirements and whether the product needs batch or individual identification. Private-label projects may also require logo placement, print colour, artwork approval, carton labels and QR placement. Those presentation requirements should be documented separately from the volumetric specification.

Documentation and calibration

If calibration or testing documentation is required, state whether it should relate to a batch or an individual instrument and whether accredited third-party work is needed. ISO 4787:2021 is relevant to testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments, while laboratory accreditation requirements are addressed separately under ISO/IEC 17025.
