Single-volume pipette specification

ISO 648 volumetric pipettes: what buyers should specify

“Pipette” is a broad purchasing term. A useful RFQ distinguishes single-volume volumetric pipettes from graduated formats.

ISO 648 is specific to single-volume pipettes

ISO 648:2008 specifies metrological and constructional requirements for single-volume pipettes, including one-mark total-delivery pipettes and two-mark volumetric pipettes. ISO reports that this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current.

Start with capacity and pipette type

State nominal volume and confirm whether the required product is a single-volume volumetric pipette or a graduated format. Where a class is required, include it explicitly. Buyers should also identify any marking, identification and packaging requirements that matter to their laboratory or distribution channel.

Delivery behaviour belongs to the product specification

Pipettes are delivery instruments, so interpretation depends on the defined product type and applicable method. Procurement documentation should preserve the exact catalogue description instead of shortening it to “glass pipette,” which can hide whether the product is volumetric, graduated, measuring or another format.

Calibration and testing requirements

ISO 4787:2021 provides methods for testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments and explicitly includes single-volume pipettes. If additional calibration documentation or accredited third-party work is required, that requirement should be written into the RFQ and confirmed before order acceptance.

Private label and traceability

Logo printing, artwork, cartons, QR access and record identifiers should be treated as controlled presentation and traceability requirements alongside the technical pipette specification. A QR code alone does not establish calibration status; the linked record determines what is actually being verified.
