Measuring cylinder specification
ISO 4788 measuring cylinders: what to define before ordering
Capacity, graduation, class and documentation should be specified together rather than relying on a generic cylinder description.
What ISO 4788 covers in the procurement conversation
ISO 4788 is the ISO reference for graduated measuring cylinders. It should be used as part of a complete product specification rather than as a standalone purchasing description. Capacity, graduation details, applicable class and documentation requirements should be confirmed for the selected item.
A measuring cylinder is not a volumetric flask
A graduated cylinder measures volumes over a range, whereas a one-mark volumetric flask is used to contain a defined volume at its calibration mark. Procurement teams should choose the family from the laboratory method rather than substituting one for another based only on nominal capacity.
Capacity and graduation details matter
Specify nominal capacity and confirm the graduation information shown for the selected catalogue item. Marking visibility, scale layout and physical configuration can influence usability, but technical claims should remain tied to reviewed evidence and the applicable product specification.
Class and documentation are separate fields
Where a particular class is required, include it in the RFQ. If testing, calibration or a certificate is also needed, state that separately. ISO 4787:2021 provides methods for testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments and includes graduated measuring cylinders within its scope.
Distributor and private-label requirements
For export orders, include sales-pack quantity, total pieces, carton requirements and destination. Private-label requirements can include logo, print colour, barcode or QR placement, labels and artwork approval. These presentation items should not blur the technical specification.
