Burette specification
ISO 385 laboratory burettes: a buyer specification guide
Capacity alone is not enough: graduation, stopcock configuration, class and documentation should be captured in the purchase specification.
Specify the burette, not just the volume
ISO 385 is the ISO product-standard reference for burettes. In purchasing, nominal capacity should be accompanied by the selected catalogue configuration, including graduation, stopcock or valve arrangement, applicable class where relevant and any documentation requirement.
Why configuration matters
Burettes deliver measured quantities during titration and related laboratory work. Differences in outlet and stopcock configuration can matter operationally, so two burettes with the same nominal capacity should not automatically be treated as interchangeable. The laboratory method and internal SOP should determine the required format.
Class and documentation are separate decisions
If Class A or another defined class is required, state it explicitly and tie it to the exact product code. If calibration or testing documentation is required, state that separately. ISO 4787:2021 includes burettes within its scope for methods of testing, calibration and use of volumetric instruments.
Traceability should identify the actual record
Where QR-linked documentation is requested, the QR should resolve to a controlled record associated with the relevant item or batch. Procurement teams should confirm the identifier, document status and whether the record is batch-based or individual. The QR symbol itself is not evidence of conformity or calibration.
Distributor and private-label requirements
For private-label or channel-partner orders, capture print artwork, carton labels, barcode or QR requirements, pack quantities and destination alongside the technical burette specification.
